Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral known for its dental health benefits, but its presence in drinking water raises concerns. Despite it being in the water we drink every day, it has been poorly studied and the effects of fluoride on health aren’t well understood.

Fluoride affects various tissues in the body, and its implications are still being researched. Key areas of concern include the brain, bones, thyroid gland, pineal gland, and blood sugar levels. Fluoride is also present in toothpaste, beer, fruit juices, and foods made with fluoridated water. The levels added to drinking water are often above those found in natural sources, with no evidence of additional benefits. Countries without fluoridation report similar tooth decay rates.

Research indicates that fluoride exposure during prenatal and postnatal development may affect neurodevelopment. A study analysing ADHD among children found that higher fluoridation rates were correlated with an increase in ADHD diagnoses, suggesting a need for further investigation into how they relate to one another.

Research has suggested a link between fluoride ingestion and hypothyroidism, but large-scale studies are limited. This is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, which are essential for regulating various bodily functions. An observational study in England found that areas with fluoridated water reported higher rates of hypothyroidism. Those fluoridated regions were nearly twice as likely to report it compared to non-fluoridated areas. These findings highlight the need for more comprehensive research on the overall effects of fluoride in our water.
